For me, as a former team member of the Giotto IMS team it was not at all obvious which data of the NMS could still be used after 20 years. Most raw and analyzed data were on data media which could not be read anymore by existing computers (data tapes, cartridges, etc.). It turned out that the only usable data were the ones which were plotted relatively shortly after the encounter on paper. The people knowing all the details of the data and the data analy- sis have long since either retired or left the University. It would not have been possible to archive these data without the help of the former NMS PI, Prof. Dieter Krankowsky and of the former PhD student Dr. Roland Meier whose help is gratefully acknowledged. The PhD theses written on the NMS by several former students (R. Meier, M. Reber, U. Dolder, J. Woweries), were of utmost importance to redo the data analysis after so many years. The digitizing of the data was done by my daughter Nelly who did a very careful job. Our ROSINA SW engineer, Thierry Semon used his knowledge on data archiving from the Rosetta mission to archive the NMS data in a PDS compatible manner. The archiving effort was supported by Joe Zender from ESA. ESA also supported the effort financially. Bern, 30. Oct. 2006 Kathrin Altwegg
