The program takes as input the PDS label and translation table(s) defining the correspondence between FITS keywords and PDS elements; it writes the resulting FITS header to a file named on the command line. P2F works by parsing the translation table to determine the keyword-element relationships and then analyzing the PDS label. As the label is processed, a data tree is built containing the translated equivalents of each PDS element, organized in a hierarchy based on the FITS header structure. The program also generates a log file listing errors, warnings and any untranslated PDS elements encountered. At present, the Translator can accommodate three different types of PDS files; a Simple Image, an ASCII Table or a Binary Table.
